The Phoenix was a steamship that burned on Lake Michigan on 21 November 1847, with the loss of at least 190 but perhaps as many as 250 lives. The loss of life made this disaster, in terms of loss of life from the sinking of a single vessel, the fourth-worst tragedy in the history of the Great Lakes.
Phoenix is an unincorporated community in Keweenaw County, Michigan, United States. Phoenix lies at the junction of M-26 and U.S. Highway 41, approximately two miles (3.2 km) south of Eagle River, near the shores of Lake Superior. [2] Phoenix was the site of the Phoenix Mine, one of the earliest copper mines in the Keweenaw Peninsula.
In the lodge's first year the lodge provided over 14,000 hours of service to Gerber Scout Reservation, Greilick Scout Camp, and the west Michigan community. The Lodge holds an annual winter event (in January), a spring event (in May), a fall event (in August), and a strategic planning weekend for the lodge executive committee (in September).
In the mid-1800s, Dutch immigrants came to Sheboygan seeking a better life. Most aboard the Phoenix ship were within sight of shore when they died.
Rock Harbor is also listed by the Geographic Names Information System as a populated place named Rock Harbor Lodge. [1] Although there is no permanent population, the area includes the Rock Harbor Lodge, restaurant, resorts, several boat docks, and campgrounds. Rock Harbor also contained its own summer post office from 1924 to 1958. [10]
The lodge was formed from merging Manitous Lodge 88 and Nacha-Mawat Lodge 373 after the Great Sauk Trail Council and Southwest Michigan Council merged into the Southern Shores Field Service Council. Similar to the Field Service Council, the lodge is divided into chapters, which correspond within district boundaries
Canadian Lakes is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Mecosta County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The area is mostly within the southwest portion of Morton Township, southwest of Mecosta and east of Stanwood. As of the 2020 census, the CDP population was 3,202, [2] up from 2,756 in 2010.
Hegewisch / Wolf Lake, Illinois (dual site) 1955 – Mar 1963 FDS. Abandoned and overgrown site at the south end of lake/state recreation area. Appears to be largely intact underneath vegetation overgrowth; old access road entrance at Ave J & 133 Street largely obliterated. This area is within the SRA on the southern shore of the lake.
