Quartzite is a very hard rock composed predominantly of an interlocking mosaic of quartz crystals. The grainy, sandpaper-like surface is glassy in appearance. Minor amounts of former cementing materials, iron oxide, silica, carbonate and clay, often migrate during recrystallization, causing streaks and lenses to form within the quartzite. [ 1 ]
In the Four Peaks area, the Mazatzal Group is divided (in ascending stratigraphic order) into an informal lower quartzite, an informal lower pelite, and the Four Peaks Quartzite. These are interpreted as a single sequence of sediment deposition. The lower quartzite is an extremely pure quartzite up to 60 meters (200 ft) thick.
It separates the Watson Ranch Quartzite tongue of Swan Peak Quartzite from the younger Eureka Quartzite. The stratum generally consists of brown, gray to black, usually fine- to medium-grained, but may be coarse-grained, dolomite. Thin [about 6 feet (1.8 m) thick] quartz sandstone and siltstone occur about 50 feet (15 m) from base. The layer is ...
The quartzite sandstone pillars and the surrounding regions were formed during the Devonian period (400 to 350 million years ago) from a combination of tectonic uplift and water erosion. [3] The highest area in the park is Huang Shi Zhai (黃石寨). It reaches a height of 3,450 feet (1,050 m) and is accessible via cable car or a set of stairs.
Crystal Peak is one of the most famous mineral collecting localities in Colorado. Specimens from Crystal Peak are sometimes referred to as coming from Lake George or Florissant, but the actual collecting area is located near Crystal Peak. The area has produced some of the finest smoky quartz and amazonite specimens in the world.
The quartzite ridge dates back to the Penokean orogeny ~1.8 billion years ago, before this the quartzite was a large sandstone deposit on the edge of a shallow sea. The volcanic activity that resulted from the orogeny metamorphosed the sandstone into the present day quartzite. [ 2 ]

Quartz arenite makes up the Prospect Mountain Quartzite on top of Doso Doyabi, Nevada. A quartz arenite or quartzarenite is a sandstone composed of greater than 90% detrital quartz. [1] Quartz arenites are the most mature sedimentary rocks possible, and are often referred to as ultra- or super-mature, and are usually cemented by silica. They ...
