Multi-winged angels, often with only their face and wings showing, drawn from the higher grades of angels, especially cherubim and seraphim, are derived from Persian art, [citation needed] and are usually shown only in heavenly contexts, as opposed to performing tasks on Earth.
The Virgin with Angels (French: La Vierge aux anges), also known as The Song of the Angels is an oil painting executed in 1881 by the French artist William-Adolphe Bouguereau. Its dimensions are 213.4 × 152.4 cm. [ 1 ] It is now in the Forest Lawn Museum in Glendale, California.
Painted for private devotion, it shows a full-length Mary holding Jesus. Mother and son are surrounded by four angels; the two above Mary are adorned with large colourful wings and hold a golden crown, symbolising her role as Queen of Heaven [4] while another two, each bearing large wings, sit on either side of her playing a harp and lute respectively.
Caravaggio's painting is less dramatic than the account given by Leo - the six-winged seraph is replaced by a two-winged angel, and there is none of the violent confrontation described by Leo - no streams of fire, no pools of blood, no shouts or fiery images of Christ. The Virgin and Child with Two Angels is a panel painting by the Italian artist Cimabue in egg tempera on a poplar panel, dated to c. 1280. It has been held by the National Gallery in London since 2000. The painting measures 25.6 cm × 20.8 cm (10.1 in × 8.2 in).
