The dimeric silicon dioxide, (SiO 2) 2 has been obtained by reacting O 2 with matrix isolated dimeric silicon monoxide, (Si 2 O 2). In dimeric silicon dioxide there are two oxygen atoms bridging between the silicon atoms with an Si–O–Si angle of 94° and bond length of 164.6 pm and the terminal Si–O bond length is 150.2 pm.
The hydrate phase, [3 CaO · 2 SiO 2 · 3 H 2 O], is referred to as the "C-S-H" phase. It grows as a mass of interlocking needles that provide the strength of the hydrated cement system. Relatively high belite reactivity is desirable in Portland cement manufacture, and the formation of the unreactive γ-form must be rigorously avoided.
The general formula is (Si x O 3x) 2x−, where one or more silicon atoms can be replaced by other 4-coordinated atom(s). The silicon:oxygen ratio is 1:3. Double rings have the formula (Si 2x O 5x) 2x− or a 2:5 ratio. The Nickel–Strunz classification is 09.C. Possible ring sizes include:
