Dennis Gerrard Stephen Doherty (November 29, 1940 – January 19, 2007) was a Canadian singer and songwriter. A tenor, he was a founding member of the 1960s musical group the Mamas & the Papas for which he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.
The group appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1967 to perform both this song and the single to follow, "Creeque Alley". Although the single has a running time of 2:56, and the group performed the song in its entirety, edited versions of the song appear on internet video sites with a much shorter running time.
The third single, "Creeque Alley", released April 1967, chronicled the band's early history and reached No. 5 in the US. By June 1967, the strain on the group was apparent when it performed indifferently at the Monterey International Pop Festival .

[1] The Temptations referenced McGuire's "Eve of Destruction" in their song "Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today)". Frank Zappa included McGuire's name on the sleeve of his Freak Out! album (1966) as one of his musical influences.
