The Johnstown & Somerset Railroad followed the Stonycreek valley north-by-northeast from Somerset through Stoystown to Johnstown around 1880. The Somerset & Mineral Point Railroad and the Johnstown & Somerset Railroad were combined and reorganized as the Somerset and Cambria Branch Railroad. [5]

It is currently a subsidiary of OmniTRAX but was founded in 1902 to serve the Great Western Sugar Company and other sugar beet and molasses companies in Colorado, and built by another Great Western subsidiary, Loveland Construction Company. The route was established in the early 1920's, having much of the same routing as it does today. The route was paved from Johnstown to US 85 by 1939 and was entirely paved by 1946. When I-25 was completed in the area in the early 1960's, SH 60 was split in two, having not been given an exit for the northern section. [2]
