Jesus has just announced that anger leads to murder, and anger is just as bad as murder itself. And that whosoever is angry with his brother shall be in danger of the ...
The structure of Matthew 5 can be broken down as follows: Matthew 5:1–12 – Setting and Beatitudes; Matthew 5:13–16 – Salt of the earth and light of the world; Matthew 5:17–20 – Law and the Prophets; Matthew 5:21–26 – Do not hate; Matthew 5:27–30 – Do not lust; Matthew 5:31–32 – Do not divorce except for sexual misconduct
Gehenna appears six other times in the Gospel of Matthew: 5:29, 5:30, 10:28, 18:19, 23:15, and 23:33 [14] Some scholars reject the idea that the first two sections refer to secular institutions. In 2 Corinthians 1:23 and Galatians 1:20 Paul of Tarsus swears oaths, and in Hebrews 6:17 God himself
[24] Rabanus Maurus: Mystically, this sitting down of Christ is His incarnation; had He not taken flesh on Him, mankind could not have come unto Him. [24] Augustine: It causes a thought how it is that Matthew relates this sermon to have been delivered by the Lord sitting on the mountain; Luke, as He stood in the plain. This diversity in their ...
Gundry feels this was done by the author of Matthew as the discussion of oaths at Deuteronomy 23:22-24 comes just prior to the discussion of divorce beginning at Deuteronomy 24:1. Other scholars feel that the discussion of oaths naturally follows the discussion of divorce as one of the major legal issues of the day was over marriage vows.
