Planet Sheen premiered in the United States on Nickelodeon on October 2, 2010, and continued to air there until August 18, 2011. The series was moved to Nicktoons on May 4, 2012, to air the remaining episodes until February 15, 2013. Planet Sheen continued to air reruns on Nicktoons until May 5, 2015.
In seasons 2 and 3 the show featured less freelance writers and most episodes were written by Banks and Grillo. In addition, season 1 was more episodic and had mostly 11-minute episodes, while seasons 2 and 3 had serial elements and mostly half-hour episodes.

Puppy is Hartman's third animated show for Nickelodeon, after The Fairly OddParents and Danny Phantom, before Bunsen Is a Beast. Sheen would later star in his own spin-off show, Planet Sheen, which premiered in 2010. In this series, he goes into Jimmy's lab and steals his new rocket ship, which crash lands on the planet Zeenu -- a possible reference to Xenu. Due to the series being short-lived, he is never shown returning to Earth.
