Preston was born in Garvock at the schoolhouse in Scotland. Her father was the local schoolmaster, Thomas McEwen, and her mother was Eliza Gray (born Mann). [1]Preston was educated at Alexandra College before going on to gain a masters degree at the Royal University of Ireland in modern languages.

Mulvany was educated at home until she was fourteen when she was sent to Alexandra School where she excelled. In 1875 she became secretary to the founder and headmistress, Mrs Anne Jellicoe. In 1880 Mulvany took over as head Mistress for the school [5] which was seven years old. The school was a prep school for Alexandra College. [4]
