Folklore studies (also known as folkloristics, tradition studies or folk life studies in the UK) [1] is the branch of anthropology devoted to the study of folklore. This term, along with its synonyms, [ note 1 ] gained currency in the 1950s to distinguish the academic study of traditional culture from the folklore artifacts themselves.
The folklore of the people of England continued to be passed down through oral tradition. [1] During the Renaissance, artists captured these customs in the written word; such as Shakespearean plays' reflections of English folklore through their witches, fairies, folk medicine, marriage and funeral customs, superstitions, and religious beliefs. [1]
The Folklore Society (FLS) is a registered charity under English law [1] based in London, England for the study of folklore. Its office is at 50 Fitzroy Street, London home of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland .

These articles were later compiled into Rambles and Studies in Old South Wales, released in 1881. [2] Frustrated by poor pay from Scribner's, Sikes began to compile folklore studies for British Goblins. It was illustrated by T. H. Thomas and published by London bookseller Sampson Low in 1880.
Davies has been based at the University of Hertfordshire since the early 2000s. In 2019, he instigated a Folklore Studies MA at the University of Hertfordshire, which is currently the only academic qualification of its kind in England and Wales. [10] In 2020, Davies was elected President of the Folklore Society. [11]
