Improvements from the Ennis end of the highway began in 1948 when the highway from Ennis west to Old Virginia City Highway in the valley was graveled. [20] Two years later, that stretch was reconstructed and paved. [1] [21] In 1951, MT 34 was placed on its present course west to the highway's summit, which bypassed Old Virginia City Highway.

In 1961, MT 287 was rerouted and replaced MT 34 from Ennis to Twin Bridges, ran concurrently with MT 41 to north of Silver Star, and replaced S-401 north to US 10 at Whitehall. MT 287 continued east with US 10 to rejoin its previous route west of Three Forks. The portion of the highway between Ennis and the US 10 junction became MT 287A. [6] [7]
In or around 1945, the section from Kaufman to Ennis was re-routed through Scurry, south of Rosser, and on a new bridge over the Trinity River. The former route from Scurry to Peeltown (Kaufman County) was assigned to an extension of Farm to Market Road 148, and about a mile of the old route is now Farm to Market Road 1181 in Telico (Ellis County).
It is 3.5 miles (5.6 km) northeast of Ennis. The parish is 4.75 by 2 miles (7.64 by 3.22 km) and covers 5,587 acres (2,261 ha). In 1841 the population was 1,995 in 297 houses. The man hamlet at that time was Spancel-Hill. The main road from Ennis to Galway runs through the parish. [2]
