The Buchanan Furnace is a historic iron furnace located in Licking Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1844, and is a cold blast charcoal furnace measuring 30 feet by 33 feet at the base and 33 feet tall. It had a maximum production of 1,200 tons per year and was abandoned in 1858 because of a lack of timber to be used as fuel.
The furnaces are constructed of stone, with the first blown into production in 1840. A second furnace was added in 1845. They were hot blast furnaces powered by a 250-horsepower steam engine. The rolling mill was also powered by a 250-horsepower steam engine and went into production in January 1842.
The furnace operated through the 1860s and supplied the iron used in the iron-clad ship the USS Monitor during the Civil War. [4] The 786-acre historic district was listed by the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. A historical marker on the site reads: "Warwick Furnace Built 1737 by Anna Nutt & Co. Made first Franklin stoves.
The third furnace to be built was the same height as the second. However, its bosh was 14 feet (4.3 m) by 16 feet (4.9 m). This furnace was powered by the same common blast as the second furnace. The fifth furnace had a stack that was 75 feet (23 m) high. It had a bosh that had a diameter of 18 feet (5.5 m).
