Benson County is a county in the U.S. state of North Dakota.As of the 2020 census, the population was 5,964. [1] Its county seat is Minnewaukan. [2] The county was created on March 9, 1883 [3] by the Dakota Territory legislature, and was named for Bertil W. Benson, a Dakota Territory legislator at the time.
The county has a total area of 1,666 square miles (4,310 km 2), of which 1,659 square miles (4,300 km 2) is land and 6.8 square miles (18 km 2) (0.4%) is water. [8] Lake Tschida , a Bureau of Reclamation reservoir and recreation area on the Heart River, is the county's largest body of water.

The Dakota Territory legislature created the county on March 9, 1883, with territory partitioned from Stark County.Its government was not organized at that time. The county name was chosen by territorial legislator Erastus A. Williams, to honor his father-in-law, Mathias K. Hettinger (1810-1890), who had been a banker and public figure in Freeport, Illinois.
