"The Way We Weren't" is the twentieth episode of the fifteenth season of the American animated television series The Simpsons. It originally aired on the Fox network in the United States on May 9, 2004. The episode was written by J. Stewart Burns and directed by Mike B. Anderson.
American R&B band Gladys Knight & the Pips recorded a cover of "The Way We Were" as part of a blend with the song "Try to Remember", released on their 1974 studio album I Feel a Song. The cover/blend was released by Buddah Records on March 14, 1975, in a 7-inch format, paired with the B-side singles "Love Finds Its Own Way" and "The Need to Be".
The musical numbers were composed by Alf Clausen, [8] the show's primary composer from 1990 until 2017, [9] and although episode writer Dana Gould is credited as the sole lyricist, Al Jean clarified in the commentary track that the lyrics were a collaborative effort between several Simpsons writers.
