The most common way is to display a family tree on Wikipedia is as an ahnentafel by Template: Ahnentafel. However, there are other options. This page originated in examples taken from a discussion on the Village pump in March/April 2005 (see Talk page). It has since been updated to use later created templates.
In order to readily have the generation stated for a certain person, the Ahnentafel numbering may be preceded by the generation. This method's usefulness becomes apparent when applied further back in the generations: e.g. 08-146 , is a male preceding the subject by 7 (8-1) generations.

[[Category:Family tree templates]] to the <includeonly> section at the bottom of that page. Otherwise, add <noinclude>[[Category:Family tree templates]]</noinclude> to the end of the template code, making sure it starts on the same line as the code's last character.
The template is not idiot-proof; if you do not add a couple, but do add their ancestors, you will probably break the layout of the tree. Instead, leave them "blank" by typing dashes as placeholders whenever you have no information about a given person, but you do have info on that person's ancestors.
It can be simply called a "family tree". Pedigrees use a standardized set of symbols, squares represent males and circles represent females. Pedigree construction is a family history, and details about an earlier generation may be uncertain as memories fade. If the sex of the person is unknown, a diamond is used.
