NTPC Limited, formerly known as National Thermal Power Corporation, is an Indian central Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the ownership of the Ministry of Power and the Government of India, who is engaged in the generation of electricity and other activities.

The power plant is the first power plant of NTPC. [2] [3] It sources coal from Jayant and Bina mines and water from Rihand Reservoir. The states benefitting from this power plant are Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh and the Union Territories of Delhi, Chandigarh and Jammu and Kashmir.
The project was originally proposed in 1999 but got delayed because Coal India Limited objected to the location of the power plant and wanted NTPC to relocate the power plant as it was coming up on site having 6 billion tonnes of coal underneath it. Coal India Limited withdrew the coal linkage to the plant in 2008.
The Vindhyachal Thermal Power Station is located in Singrauli district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.One of the coal-fired power stations of NTPC, it is the largest power station in India, and the 10th largest coal-fired power station in the world, with an installed capacity of 4,760 MW with total of 4783 MW.
