Ellesmere Port is on the south eastern edge of the Wirral Peninsula, six miles (ten kilometres) north of Chester, on the bank of the Manchester Ship Canal. The town had a population of 61,090 in the 2011 census. [2] Ellesmere Port also forms part of the wider Birkenhead urban area, which had a population of 325,264 in 2011. [3]
It was administered as part of Wirral Rural District until 1933 when it was transferred to Ellesmere Port Urban District. On 1 April 1950 the parish was abolished and merged with Ellesmere Port. [3] [4] The population was 112 in 1801, 319 in 1851 and rising to 685 by 1901. [3] In 1931 the parish had a population of 792. [5]
In 2007, as part of a revival of some industries, ports and shipbuilding in Britain, Ellesmere Port docks were re-opened. Middle Island is a small island, just 18.5 hectares (46 acres) in area. [1] It is the southernmost point of land in Canada, located at 41°41'N, 82°41"W (41.685,-82.684), or about 41.7 degrees north latitude. It lies in Lake Erie, just south of Pelee Island, and is part of Point Pelee National Park. It forms part of the province of Ontario.
