Well withing the normal operating range of the bullet. If you had a max load of 2400, getting 1400 fps from handgun, then it may well go up to 1800 fps from the rifle barrel, as that powder is more optimized in longer barrels. In this case, you would have to worry about over-driving the bullet, causing over-expansion and lack of penetration.

  3. 30-30 vs 44 mag lever - The High Road

Rather this is a question as to why the 44 lever gun isn’t as popular as the 30-30. The 44 mag. can launch a 180 gr bullet about as fast as the 30-30 does with a 170 gr out of its short barrel. Plus, the 44 can shoot 300 gr bullets at just north of 1000 fps. It isn’t blistering fast but will certainly penetrate just about anything if your ...

At 50 yards, energy drops to 760 ft lbs and at 100 yds there is still 632 ft lbs left .... plenty for a clean kill. If you zero your sights at 50 yards, bullet drop at 100 yards will be about 5", which is still within limits.

Google Balistics By The Inch 44 magnum. This is a good chart that seems to be pretty accurate. Notice that the 10 1/2 super Blackhawk isn;t that far from rifle velocities. I also have a 12 inch Thompson Hunter with an inclosed chamber unnlike a revolver open on both ends of the cylinder. It almost reaches 16 inch velosities of a shoort lever rifle.

Hornady loads the FTX to optimize expansion and penetration. If you increase the velocity of the FTX bullet it is going to over expand and fail to penetrate. The fact that Hornady chose the FTX for their leverlution line of ammo does not make me feel confident in their choice. Here is a test of the 357 leverevelution.

  8. .41 Magnum vs. .44 Magnum - Ruger Forum

    www.rugerforum.net/threads/41-magnum-vs-44-magnum.4749

The .44 is like a good swift kick and the .41 is like a good shove. .41 magnum ammo is very exspensive and limited. It will force you to reload if you want to shoot more than once or twice a year. Bullet selection is limited and if you really want to go above 210/220 grain you will need to load cast bullets.

  9. How much difference in effectiveness between a 16 and 20...

I have a Marlin 1894C, chambered in 357 Mag with an 18 1/2" barrel. I've found with a lever action's short receiver; a 20" barrel will feel about the same as a 16" barrel in a bolt action rifle that has a much longer receiver. So, the handling difference in a 16" versus a 20" is not that different.

Remington 240gr. JSP work well too, but I haven't seen them in the local stores lately. Mag tech 240gr, JSP seem to be loaded lighter as there is noticable less recoil and they fail to cycle 1 out of 5 to 10 shots. Of course, results may vary in different guns, ruger specifies the 44 carbine is designed for full power 240gr. loads.

The value is really just in points 2 and 3. Two points about your point 1: 1) External Ballistics rarely actually matter for the 44mag, we simply don't shoot them far enough. 2) More importantly: Surprisingly, the 44mag 225grn FTX doesn't actually have better aerodynamics than similar bullets!
