Meadowlark. Meadowlarks are New World grassland birds belonging to genera Sturnella and Leistes. This group includes seven species of largely insectivorous grassland birds. In all species the male at least has a black or brown back and extensively red or yellow underparts.
The genus Sturnella was introduced in 1816 by the French ornithologist Louis Pierre Vieillot with the eastern meadowlark (Sturnella magna) as the type species. [1] [2] The name Sturnella is a diminutive of the Latin sturnus meaning "starling". [3] By the early 20th century, the meadowlarks were split.

It was later used as the prologue to Le Guin's 1966 novel Rocannon's World. In later publications, including in the 1975 anthology The Wind's Twelve Quarters, the story was given the title "Semley's Necklace".

The genus Leistes are predominantly South American grassland birds called meadowlarks. The genus was previously lumped with the North American meadowlarks in the genus Sturnella . It includes five species of largely insectivorous grassland birds. In all species the male at least has a black or brown back and extensively red underparts.
