Dr. Glenn R. Frye House is a historic home located at Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina. It was built in 1937, and is a two-story, Colonial Revival style stone dwelling. Lake James is a large reservoir in the mountains of Western North Carolina which straddles the border between Burke and McDowell Counties. It is named for tobacco tycoon and benefactor of Duke University James Buchanan Duke. The lake, with surface elevation of 1200 ft (366 m), lies behind a series of 4 earthen dams.
The Hickory region is served by Interstate 40 which passes through the center of Catawba and Burke counties. Other important US highways in the region include: US 70 (east to Morehead City, west to Asheville), and US 321 (through Catawba and Caldwell Counties). Primary state routes include NC 10, NC 16, NC 18, NC 90, NC 127, and NC 150.
The South Fork Catawba River travels 48.5 miles, passing along the communities of Lincolnton, High Shoals, McAdenville, and Cramerton, to Lake Wylie where its now submerged confluence with the Catawba River lies near the North Carolina and South Carolina border. Signage on roadways crossing the river acknowledge it as the "South Fork River".
Along the northern edge of the community is Gunpowder Creek, inundated to form an arm of Lake Hickory. According to the United States Census Bureau , the CDP has a total area of 1.9 square miles (4.9 km 2 ), of which 1.5 square miles (3.9 km 2 ) is land and 0.4 square miles (1.0 km 2 ), or 21.24%, is water.
