Blues for Allah is the eighth studio album (twelfth album overall) by the Grateful Dead. It was released on September 1, 1975, and was the band's third album released through their own Grateful Dead Records label. The album was recorded between February and May of 1975 during an extended hiatus from touring.
Grateful Dead Records Collection is a box set of albums by the rock band the Grateful Dead. It contains four albums on five LPs. The albums were previously released by the band's own record company, Grateful Dead Records. They were remastered for the box set, and pressed on 180-gram vinyl.
The band released four vinyl LPs on the label in the mid-1970s: Wake of the Flood in 1973, From the Mars Hotel in 1974, Blues for Allah in 1975, and a live double album, Steal Your Face, in 1976. Album distribution was negotiated and contracted by the band's label through United Artists Records.
Included are numerous previously unreleased studio outtakes and live tracks. The ten albums in the set are Wake of the Flood, From the Mars Hotel, Blues for Allah, Terrapin Station, Shakedown Street, Go to Heaven, In the Dark, Built to Last, and the two live albums Reckoning and Dead Set (both expanded to two-CD sets).
The concert marked the first time that the album Blues for Allah was performed live in its entirety, along with eight other songs. Retrospectively, Rolling Stone magazine lists the concert as one of 20 "essential" live concerts by the Grateful Dead. [3]
An edit of "U.S. Blues" was released as a single (b/w "Loose Lucy"). Four of the songs from the album remained in live rotation throughout the band's existence. "Scarlet Begonias" in particular became an extended-jam highlight, later usually paired with a segue into "Fire on the Mountain," while "U.S. Blues" was a preferred encore.
The tracks on Sage & Spirit were excerpted from the albums Workingman's Dead (1970), American Beauty (1970), Europe '72 (1972), Wake of the Flood (1973), From the Mars Hotel (1974), Blues for Allah (1975), Shakedown Street (1978), and Go to Heaven (1980). Sage & Spirit was a cross-marketing promotion with Dogfish Head Brewery.
