Shoal Creek is a stream and an urban watershed in Austin, Texas, United States.. Shoal Creek has its headwaters near The Domain and runs in a southerly direction, soon reaching the intersection of Texas State Highway Loop 1, locally known as "MoPac Expressway" or simply "MoPac," [note 1] and Highway 183.
The Mayfield–Gutsch Estate, now named Mayfield Park, is a historic cottage, gardens and nature preserve in west Austin, Texas on a bluff overlooking Lake Austin. Originally built in the 1870s, the cottage was purchased by former Texas Secretary of State Allison Mayfield in 1909.
The facilities include an 11,000 sq ft nature center with a 1,300-US-gallon (4,900 L; 1,100 imp gal) aquarium, classrooms, exhibits, and a library. Outdoors, there are 4 miles (6.4 km) of trails with eco-type learning stations, a gazebo, and a small pavilion. [2] The center is located within the city-owned 60 acre Wildcat Park.
The park is located on Shoal Creek (originally called the Sycamore River) and commemorates the historical activities of famous frontiersman David Crockett in the local area. Crockett settled near the creek bank in 1817 and started a powder mill, grist mill and distillery using the creek's water power.
