Hagerman is located in south-central Chaves County approximately 2 miles (3 km) west of the Pecos River. New Mexico State Road 2 passes through the town, leading northwest 24 miles (39 km) to Roswell, the county seat, and south 20 miles (32 km) to Artesia. NM 249 leads east from the center of town 32 miles (51 km) to the top of the Mescalero Ridge.
Lake Arthur is located near the southern border of Chaves County about 1 mile (1.6 km) west of the Pecos River. New Mexico State Road 2 passes through the town, leading north 9 miles (14 km) to Hagerman and south 11 miles (18 km) to Artesia.
Chaves County was named for Colonel Jose Francisco Chaves, a military leader there during the Civil War and later in Navajo campaigns. The county was created by the New Mexico Territorial Legislature on February 25, 1889, out of land from Lincoln County. Chaves County comprises the Roswell, New Mexico Micropolitan Statistical Area.
