Farm Island Recreation Area is a state recreation area in Hughes County, South Dakota in the United States. It is named for Farm Island located in the Missouri River, just downstream of Pierre, the state capitol. The island is now connected to the main shore via a causeway.
South Dakota State Parks and recreation areas range in size from the 19-acre Sandy Shore Recreation Area to the 71,000-acre Custer State Park. It was the first park established in the system, in 1919. Good Earth State Park at Blood Run is the most recent park, added in 2013. System-wide visitation in 2016 was 7,500,000. [1]

The park is divided in two sections on Roy Lake, and is open for year-round recreation including camping, beaches, swimming, fishing, hiking and boating. [1] The Roy Lake Resort & Lodge is located in the park. [2] Boat ramps are available and visitors can rent boats from the resort. There are 100 campsites on two campgrounds and 3 cabins. [3]

[ 3 ] Also, located around the reservoir is the Hugh Glass Lakeside Use Area , named for the mountain man, Hugh Glass , which is also operated by the Game, Fish, and Parks as a free campground, boat launch and picnic area. Sheridan Dam was built in 1939 as an earthen structure, 134 feet (41 m) tall with a length of 850 feet (260 m) at its crest. The maximum capacity of the reservoir is 22,043 acre-feet (27,190,000 m 3), and the normal storage is 13,395 acre-feet (16,522,000 m 3).
