The early Norwegian black metal scene of the 1990s is credited with shaping the modern black metal genre and producing some of the most acclaimed and influential artists in extreme metal. The scene had a distinct ethos, and its core members referred to themselves as "The Black Circle" or "Black Metal Inner Circle."
The imagery of black metal reflects its lyrics and ideology. In the early 1990s, most pioneering black metal artists had minimalist album covers featuring xeroxed black-and-white pictures and/or writing. [5] This was partly a reaction against death metal bands, who at that time had begun to use brightly colored album artwork. [5]
Borknagar was founded by Øystein Brun, then a member of the Norwegian death metal band Molested, when he became tired of the brutal aspects of the band's music. Øystein formed Borknagar to explore a more melodic outlet of expression, inspired by the burgeoning black metal movement Norway was experiencing and looking to push the boundaries of what was considered "traditional" black metal music.
Burzum (/ ˈ b ɜːr z əm /; Norwegian: [ˈbʉ̀rtsʉm]) is a Norwegian music project founded by former Mayhem member Varg Vikernes in 1991. Although Burzum never played live performances, it became a staple of the early Norwegian black metal scene and is considered one of the most influential acts in black metal's history.
Critics have categorized Devil Master's music as black metal [18] [19] and deathrock. [20] [21] Writers for Metal Injection and Decibel have use the term "vampunk" to reference their sound, [17] [22] while MetalSucks editor-in-chief Emperor Rhombus calls them "sleaze-thrash", [23] [24] and BrooklynVegan and Metal Injection have used "blackened punk".
