Calvert Cliffs State Park is a public recreation area in Lusby, Calvert County, Maryland, that protects a portion of the cliffs that extend for 24 miles along the eastern flank of the Calvert Peninsula on the west side of Chesapeake Bay from Chesapeake Beach southward to Drum Point.
The Calvert Formation is a geologic formation in Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware. It preserves fossils dating back to the early to middle Miocene epoch of the Neogene period . It is one of the three formations which make up the Calvert Cliffs , all of which are part of the Chesapeake Group .

These cliffs, generally known as Calvert Cliffs, are famous for their fossils, especially fossilized shark teeth, which are commonly found washed up on the beaches next to the cliffs. Scientists' Cliffs is a beach community in Calvert County named for the desire to create a retreat for scientists when the community was founded in 1935. [14]

The Chesapeake Group is a geologic group in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and North Carolina. [1] [2] [3] It preserves mainly marine fossils dating back to the Late Oligocene through the Pliocene epochs of the Neogene period. [4]
It constitutes a total land area of about 350 square miles (910 km 2) and is essentially conterminous with Calvert County. [2] Immediately south of the Calvert Peninsula is the larger St. Mary's Peninsula, defined by the Patuxent and Potomac Rivers. Calvert Peninsula is connected to St. Mary's Peninsula by the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge.
