Nicholas Street and Mary Street on the island formed the medieval city centre of Limerick and are perhaps the oldest streets in the city. Samuel Lewis writing in 1837 in his Topographical Dictionary of Ireland describes Limerick's old city of Englishtown as resembling the city of Rouen, Normandy with the housing built in Flemish fashion. On 25 August 1959, Limerick's best known department store was the scene of the city's largest and most destructive fire. Todd's which occupied a large city block fronting onto O'Connell Street (now occupied by Brown Thomas) and William Street went on fire following an electrical fault. [ 3 ]
The street is architecturally Georgian in style like much of the Limerick City Centre area. There was a major fire on William Street in May 1860. [2] Prior to the construction of the Limerick Southern Ring Road the street formed part of the N24 route between Limerick & Waterford. It is now part of the R527 road.
