Samuel Miller was born in Dover, Delaware, on October 31, 1769. [1] His father was the Rev. John Miller (1722–1791). Miller attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 1789. He earned his license to preach in 1791, and the University of Pennsylvania awarded him a Doctorate of Divinity degree (D.D.) in 1804.

Eldred is also home to the World War II Museum. During the war, Eldred was the site of a munitions plant that produced eight million bombs, mortar shells and fuses. Fifteen hundred people worked there, 24 hours a day, from January 1942 to May 1945, supporting the war effort.

He was the first Jewish person to receive an Archbishop Edward F. Hoban Award for service to the Catholic Church.
