My standard load is a 300 grain xtp pushed just over 1650fps. That is more powerful than most 30-30 loads, all 44 loads and above the original black powder 45-70 buffalo load. That being said, I load 357 mag "rifle loads" to 357 maximum power. A 140 grain xtp to 2300fps which is more powerful than ALL 223/556 loads.

I've always wanted a lever action rifle, I think every collection needs to have at least one lever gun. For the past month every time I go into my Wal Mart I have been eyeing a Marlin model 336W chambered for 30/30. The rifle also comes with a sling. It's $298.99 which I think is a pretty fair price.

357 is a good 100-yard rifle for sure. Meets the price-point and needs of most shooters. Magazine fed lever guns in flat-shooting cartridges are out there should your love of the lever take you there.
Marlin uses a slow twist rate for their barrels in .44 Mag so they don't handle the heavier .44 bullets. They really are only ideal for 240 grain bullets. Rossi uses a 1-30 twist which is good for up to 300 grain bullets. Henry wised up and now uses a 1-20 twist. They used to be the same as Marlin with the slow 1-39. Winchester uses a 1-24.
First impression is yes , I want to see one . Then I realise 1/2 the fun of 357 in say a lever gun is the ability to run everything from weak 38 target loads up to heavy bullet hot 357s. This isn't going to work in a semi. You would be limited to a narrow power range. When I think semi my mind goes to removable magazines and the rim of a 357 ...
150 yards, 1033, 579. 200 yards, 984, 527. Numbers wise at that low black powder era velocity has nothing going for it compared to the 357 magnum. However the 245 gr bullet provides a lot more momentum than the .357 magnum as well as better sectional density than the .357 Magnum or .45 Colt, and on par with the .30-30.
This gives pressure like the 44 Mag but with bigger and heavier bullets. The 45 Colt is nearly equivalent to a 30/30 out of a lever gun. I have a number of revolvers in 44mag as well as 45 Colt and I like the 45 Colt bettered in handguns too. Some of the hot loads get muzzle energyclose to some of the soft 45/70.
