The guide was first published in 1853 [2] by William Tweedie of 337 Strand, London, under the title The ABC or Alphabetical Railway Guide.It had the subtitle: How and when you can go from London to the different stations in Great Britain, and return; together with the fares, distances, population, and the cab fares from the different stations.

The Harrogate line is a passenger rail line through parts of North Yorkshire and the West Yorkshire area of northern England connecting Leeds to York by way of Harrogate and Knaresborough. Service on the line is operated by Northern, with a few additional workings by London North Eastern Railway starting and terminating at Harrogate.
When the Great North of England Railway opened in 1841, the fastest train between York and Darlington was the London Mail. Connecting at York with a service that had travelled overnight from London, this travelled the 44 miles (71 km) to Darlington in 2 hours 5 minutes, an average speed of 21 miles per hour (34 km/h).
