The first school house (a log-cabin) was built and opened in 1803. There have been five different buildings housing Zanesville High School. The first was on 9th Street 1842 till 1884, which was razed to build Pioneer Elementary School. The second in 1884, and in 1908 became Hancock Junior High School, when the new high school was built.
John McIntire (October 15, 1759 – July 29, 1815) was the founder of the city of Zanesville, Ohio. McIntire was born in Alexandria, Virginia . He married Sarah Zane, the daughter of Colonel Ebenezer Zane , in December 1789.
In 1908, a new Zanesville High School was built across the street and named Lash High School in honor of Superintendent William D. Lash. The fourth version, was opened on September 9, 1954, on Blue Ave. This land was willed by John McIntire for public park/education.

Zanesville was named after Ebenezer Zane (1747–1811), who had blazed Zane's Trace, a pioneer trail from Wheeling, West Virginia, to Maysville, Kentucky, through present-day Ohio. In 1797, he remitted land as payment to his son-in-law, John McIntire (1759–1815), at the point where Zane's Trace met the Muskingum River .
