By car, LHR is closer, quicker & cheaper at about 65 miles/75 minutes. Though LGW is only around 30 miles (15 to 30 minutes) further so it's fairly inconsequential. But you do need to pre-book or you'll pay a fortune by hailing a cab at the airport. The usual route LGW to Southampton passes close to LHR, hence the extra 30 miles.
Posted March 7, 2017. Fly into Heathrow and pre-arrange a transfer to Southampton cruise port with International Friends. They will take you to Stonehenge on the way. There are probably many companies that will do the same thing. For us, it was a great transfer for a reasonable price.
Train Station at airport, and it's a 7 min ride (GBP 3) to Southampton Central (less than a mile from most docs) Main Airports; LHR/London Heathrow - Closest and largest of the London airports; however lacks rail service to the Southwest, so National Express coach to Southampton (about 2hr transfer).
There are plenty of taxis outside Southampton Central which is the main station in Southampton. Make sure you DON'T get off at Southampton Airport! It's only a few pounds and not worth walking. The taxi driver will just whizz you down there in a few minutes.
Avis is the odd-one-out amongst the big rental agencies - their nearest depot is at Southampton airport, about a £20 taxi ride from the cruise terminals. But it's on the city boundary close to the national road system, and avoids town-driving in Southampton.
Heathrow is on the outskirts (Southampton side) of London so if coming in the day before it would be an airport hotel or Southampton. I'd opt for Southampton, as mentioned the Holiday Inn is right at the port but there are several other chains close by too. Westquay shopping/entertainment centre is walking distance from all of them.

Premier Inn West Quay and Leonardo Royal (formerly Grand Harbour) are also popular with cruisers - again walkable to City Cruise Terminal. Ditto the Pig-in-the-Wall or Ennio's if you prefer something rather quirky & boutique. But any hotel on this page & map is no worse than a £10 taxi fare to your ship, so don't worry too much about included ...
Arrivals in Southampton are usually 5am to 7am, so 8am is probably first disembarkation.. Cheapest is Nat Express as per @sddsddean's post - you will want to be at the airport about 2.5 hrs before your flight time, 90 minutes is the bare minimum, so book an appropriately-timed coach - they do book out early.
361. June 12, 2003. Shrewsbury, England. #2. Posted April 22, 2004. Heathrow is about 25 miles closer to Southampton than Gatwick. I would think you would be best flying to whichever airport is cheapest as your ground transportation cost are not going to be that much different. Nick. NCL Star March 2004.
