Kirkstall's brewery was first registered in 1871 and its original building remains, albeit as student flats (the current brewery operates from premises nearby). Kirkstall Forge continued to grow throughout this period. During the late 18th century, the reconstruction of the upper and lower forges allowed 'shovel and spade production' to commence.
