The following growth through the 1950s and 60s, Austin Brookshire's three sons, Oscar, Eugene, and R.A., assumed leadership and grew the company to more than 70 stores. In 1999, as the surviving brothers neared retirement, the company embarked on an employee-owner stock buy out. By 2006, Brookshire Brothers achieved 100% employee-ownership.
Brookshire's was originally part of the Brookshire Brothers chain, which was founded seven years earlier in Lufkin, Texas. The companies split up in 1939 when Wood T. Brookshire took control of the Tyler-area stores in exchange for his share in the Brookshire Brothers partnership. [1] The companies are no longer related except by name.
By February 2014, talks were underway for Brookshire Brothers, a grocery chain based in Lufkin, Texas, to acquire David's. [6] [7] [8] In early April, the deal was completed. Ten of the David's locations, including a David's Express and the Pecan Foods store would have their names remain, while the other 15 will have the Brookshire Brothers name.

An in-store bakery was opened in 1941 and proved to be popular. By 1947, the store expanded again. The Haggens closed the White House and built the Town and Country Shopping center on Meridian Street between West Illinois and Maryland streets with Haggen's Thriftway, the store's third name, as the anchor tenant. This store still operates today.
