Mount Angel Abbey is a Catholic monastery of Benedictine monks located in Saint Benedict, Oregon, northeast of Salem, it was established 143 years ago in 1882 from Engelberg Abbey, in Switzerland. The abbey, located on the top of Mount Angel , a 485-foot-high butte (148 m), [ 1 ] has its own post office separate from the city of Mt. Angel.
In 1889 Mount Angel College opened. [3] On May 3, 1892, the building complex burned to the ground. Odermatt resigned as prior and traveled the country as a fundraiser to collect money for reconstruction. In 1899, construction began at another location and was completed in 1903. On March 23, 1904, the monastery became an independent abbey.
