They are commonly known as the Calcutta Botanical Garden and previously as the Royal Botanic Garden, Calcutta. [3] The gardens exhibit a wide variety of rare plants and a total collection of over 12,000 specimens spread over 109 hectares. It is under Botanical Survey of India (BSI) of Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India.
He is credited as a leader in reviving and reorganizing the Botanical Survey of India. [1] [3] He was the first Indian to publish original findings on diatoms and iron bacteria of India. After retiring from the Botanical Garden he became a director of the medical plants scheme of the West Bengal Government in 1954.
