The trust became part of Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust on 1 July 2023. It ran two major hospitals: Whiston Hospital - the primary site and trust headquarters providing emergency and acute inpatient services, alongside a maternity unit and the Mersey Regional Burns and Plastic Surgery Unit.
The hospital has its origins in the Ormskirk Union Workhouse Infirmary which was established in 1853. [1] It became the County Hospital and Institution in the 1930s and, after joining the National Health Service in 1948, it went on to become Ormskirk County Hospital in the 1950s and subsequently Ormskirk and District General Hospital. In 2013/14 the trust sent 251 patients to private hospitals at a cost of £3.6m, an increase from 2012/13 when there were 136 referrals at a cost of £2.1m. Newton Community Hospital originally opened around 1924, on an older site further down Bradlegh Road. [1] In 2006, a planning application was submitted to allow for a development of a new building for the Newton Community Hospital, which was approved. [2] Construction begun and the hospital opened to patients in September 2008.
