Unlike many of Wright's other residential commissions of this scale which were built of brick or plastered cement block, the Gridley house is a framed wood structure with a lathed batten exterior covered with earth-toned tinted stucco, and exterior door, window frames and trim of light stained cedar. The house originally had a cedar shake roof ...
Regionalist artist Grant Wood, who grew up and lived in Cedar Rapids as an adult, was commissioned to design the memorial window. The window measures 24 by 20 feet (7.3 by 6.1 m). It is the only stained glass window designed by Wood. [6] It depicts a 16 feet (4.9 m) Lady of Peace and Victory in the clouds. [6]
Wood also worked as a decorator when he lived here and designed the interior of the main house when it was converted into a funeral home. His work included two stained glass windows that flank the main entrance. Several Wood paintings also hung in the funeral home. The house is a 2½-story, brick Georgian Revival structure.

The house, completed in 1891, is near the eastern end of Summit Avenue near the Cathedral of Saint Paul. The house, for its time, was very large and was the "showcase of St. Paul" until James J. Hill's death in 1916. [1]
