Boomerang was created as a new home for these and similar programming, originating as a programming block on Cartoon Network that launched on December 8, 1992 until October 3, 2004. With Cartoon Network downplaying its archival programming in favor of newer original series, Turner launched the Boomerang cable channel on April 1, 2000.

Several more bumpers using CGI animation made by Guru Studio [34] subsequently premiered on the channel during this period. An updated look for the channel was unveiled, no longer featuring the original logo (and fully utilizing the wordmark), [35] for a partial rebranding made by the Montreal-based Buzz Image Group on August 29, 2005. These bumpers were sometimes also used on the TV channel. The evening block last aired in March 2002, and the morning block last aired in September 2004. However late-night airings of Boomerang on Cartoon Network continued until early 2005, when the Boomerang channel received a face-lift. In late 2012, it received the looks of Boomerang's UK feed.
In the Nordics, Cartoonito launched as a programming block on Boomerang on 1 February 2022. On June 14, 2021, new idents of the block appeared on videos (which includes Esme & Roy, Mush-Mush & the Mushables, Care Bears: Unlock the Magic, and Love Monster) on Cartoonito's YouTube channel, and a newsletter was announced, with a new banner and avatar on the Cartoonito YouTube Channel in July.
