Parazoa (Parazoa, gr. Παρα-, para, "next to", and ζωα, zoa, "animals") are a taxon with sub-kingdom category that is located at the base of the phylogenetic tree of the animal kingdom in opposition to the sub-kingdom Eumetazoa; they group together the most primitive forms, characterized by not having proper tissues or that, in any case, these tissues are only partially differentiated.
Used for species that resemble previously named species. Examples: Paranthodon ("nearly flower tooth"); Pararhabdodon ("near fluted tooth"); Parasaurolophus ("near lizard crest")-pelta: Pronunciation: /pɛltə:/ Origin: Ancient Greek: πέλτη (péltē). Meaning: shield. Frequently used for ankylosaurs.
Although adult sponges are fundamentally sessile animals, some marine and freshwater species can move across the sea bed at speeds of 1–4 mm (0.039–0.157 in) per day, as a result of amoeba-like movements of pinacocytes and other cells. A few species can contract their whole bodies, and many can close their oscula and ostia. Juveniles drift ...
The term phylum was coined in 1866 by Ernst Haeckel from the Greek phylon (φῦλον, "race, stock"), related to phyle (φυλή, "tribe, clan"). [4] [5] Haeckel noted that species constantly evolved into new species that seemed to retain few consistent features among themselves and therefore few features that distinguished them as a group ("a self-contained unity"): "perhaps such a real and ...

Species of this genus usually appear as groups of curved vases, up to 2 cm long, each ending in an osculum. The overall shape is sometimes likened to a tiny bunch of bananas. They are most often observed in tide pools, clustered around the base of seaweeds or on rocks, and occur in a variety of colours, usually rather pale. Its canal system is ...
So far, three other extant species have been described, in two distinct classes: Uniplacotomia (Hoilungia hongkongensis in 2018 and Cladtertia collaboinventa in 2022 [14]) and Polyplacotomia (Polyplacotoma mediterranea, the most basal, in 2019 [15]). A single putative fossil species is known, the Middle Triassic Maculicorpus microbialis. [1]
Eumetazoa (from Ancient Greek εὖ (eû) 'well' μετά (metá) 'after' and ζῷον (zôion) 'animal'), also known as diploblasts, Epitheliozoa or Histozoa, are a proposed basal animal clade as a sister group of Porifera (sponges).
