The reservoir receives water from an area of 1,450 sq mi (3,800 km 2) and provides a storage capacity of 295,500 acre⋅ft (364,500 dam 3) at spillway crest. An additional 23,900 acre⋅ft (29,500 dam 3 ) can be stored by raising the gates, bringing the total capacity to 319,400 acre⋅ft (394,000 dam 3 ).
South Fork State Recreation Area is a state park unit of the state of Nevada covering nearly four thousand acres, located five miles (8.0 km) due south of Elko. [4] The park comprises the 1,650-acre (670 ha) South Fork Reservoir [5] and surrounding marsh, meadowlands, and hills.
The park is located in a part of Nevada that in prehistoric times was under Lake Lahontan.When the lake had receded lower than the present-day reservoir, by about 23,000 years ago, animals such as camels, horses, rabbits, and squirrels would drink from the river, and some of their fossils have been found about 14 miles (23 km) north of the dam.
Lahontan State Recreation Area is a public recreation area surrounding Lake Lahontan, a 17-mile-long (27 km) impoundment of the Carson River, [4] located approximately 18 miles (29 km) west of Fallon, Nevada. [5] The reservoir features 69 miles (111 km) of shoreline and 11,200 acres (4,500 ha) of water when full. [6]
Beaver Dam State Park was among the first four state parks established when the state park system was created by the Nevada Legislature in 1935. The Civilian Conservation Corps was active from 1934 to 1936 building camping and picnicking areas that were destroyed by floods later in the 1930s.
