The Brahman is an American breed of zebuine-taurine hybrid beef cattle. It was bred in the United States from 1885 using cattle originating in India, imported at various times from the United Kingdom, India, and Brazil.
Over 1000 breeds of cattle are recognized worldwide, some of which adapted to the local climate, others which were bred by humans for specialized uses. [1]Cattle breeds fall into two main types, which are regarded as either two closely related species, or two subspecies of one species.
The largest population was reported from South Africa, at approximately 25 000; significant numbers were reported from Australia, Brazil, Morocco, Namibia, Paraguay and South Africa. [ 6 ] In the United States there were 28 000 head in 1975; [ 2 ] by 1990 this had fallen to about 15 200, and to just under 8500 in 2000–2001.
The genetic background of the breed is approximately 50 per cent Hereford and 50 per cent Brahman. Brafords are mainly found in NSW and Queensland Australia. Braford semen has been exported into South America and South Africa. Live cattle exports have been made into Indonesia and Thailand. [3]

The resulting progeny were then crossed with Brahman cattle to achieve an F1 hybrid. Further crosses over a broader base led to the production of the 5/8 Limousin – 3/8 Brahman Brahmousin purebred, a mix which has been found to be the most widely accepted and most useful for the majority of the US.
