It is the successor to two schools: the Western Military Institute, which Sam Davis, the "Boy Hero of the Confederacy", attended, and the former University of Nashville. The school's board operates under the corporate title, "Board of Trustees of the University of Nashville", although the university was disbanded in 1909.
It was initially named Nashville Catholic High School for Boys before adopting its current name in 1927 to honor Father Abram Joseph Ryan. In 1944, students at Father Ryan in conjunction with other schools in Nashville raised nearly $600,000 to purchase a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress to be named "The Spirit of Father Ryan" during World War II. Madison Christian School was founded as a ministry of the First Baptist Church of Madison in September 1980, enrolling students from grades one through four. [2] In 1981 plans were announced by First Baptist and Grace Baptist to build a new school building, rename the school Davidson Academy, and expand to grades K-12.
In the very early years of the school, high school students took the courses of their own selection and, when they felt ready, went on to college-level courses.
