On December 9, 1937, Pope Pius XI elevated the Diocese of Louisville to the Archdiocese of Louisville. At the same time, the pope erected the Diocese of Owensboro, taking western Kentucky from the new archdiocese. [9] The Dioceses of Covington, Owensboro, and Nashville were now designated as suffragan dioceses of the Archdiocese of Louisville. [10]
His remains rest today in a chapel in the cathedral undercroft. The project begun by Bishop Flaget was completed by Bishop Martin John Spalding , the second Bishop of Louisville. On October 3, 1852, the new cathedral was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of the Cathedral of the Assumption.

The Basilica of Saint Joseph Proto-Cathedral is a Catholic parish church at 310 West Stephen Foster Avenue in Bardstown, Kentucky.It is the original cathedral of the present Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville, originally erected as the Diocese of Bardstown — "proto-cathedral" means the original cathedral of a see that has transferred or moved.
