[1] In number of stores, Albert Heijn is the largest supermarket chain in the Netherlands followed by Jumbo and PLUS. [2]

The original business was established in 1942 by Dirk van den Broek (1924–2020) as a milk store in Amsterdam.In 1948 it was converted into a self-service market. The first supermarket was opened in 1953, also in Amsterdam.

[3] It was founded in the Netherlands in 1932, [4] by Adriaan van Well.
The company was founded by Simon de Wit (1852–1934), who after his father's death in 1867 started a grocery store from his parental house in Wormerveer. In 1888 he opened the first branch in Amsterdam and by 1900 he ran stores at 30 different locations and owned a central warehouse in Zaandam. [13]
In 1968, the first Makro store opened in Amsterdam. In the following years more stores opened in the Netherlands and several other European countries. In April 1971 the first Makro in the UK opened in Eccles, Manchester. Also in 1971, the first Makro store outside Europe opened in South Africa. [1]
