The harbor is fed by the waters of the Hudson River (historically called the North River as it passes Manhattan), as well as the Gowanus Canal.It is connected to Lower New York Bay by the Narrows, to Newark Bay by the Kill Van Kull, and to Long Island Sound by the East River, which, despite its name, is actually a tidal strait.
Description: The Edward Mooney House at 18 Bowery on the corner of Pell Street in the Bowery neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City was built between 1785 and 1789 in the Georgian or Early Federal style, and is the oldest surviving town house in that style in the city.
By the 1940s, in an era when the Bowery was known as New York City's "Skid Row," the hotel had been transformed to accommodate returning soldiers from World War II, down-and-outs and the down-on-their-luck as a flophouse. All of the floors were rebuilt with single room cabins, bunk rooms, and communal bathrooms to maximize occupancy.
The western edge of Bowery Bay is the site of the Bowery Bay Water Pollution Control Plant, a wastewater treatment plant operated by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection. The plant opened in 1939 and is capable of treating 150 million US gallons (570,000 m 3 ) of sewage per day from northwestern Queens. [ 4 ]
