The State University of Surabaya or Surabaya State University (Indonesian: Universitas Negeri Surabaya; Javanese: ꦈꦤꦶꦮ꦳ꦼꦂꦱꦶꦠꦱ꧀ꦤꦼꦒꦼꦫꦶꦱꦸꦫꦧꦪ; abbreviated as Unesa, Javanese pronunciation:) is a public university located in Surabaya, a metropolitan city in northeastern coastal region of Java Island.
The institute was founded with the support and assistance of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), who sent a team in 1985 to assess the need for aid. Led by Prof. Y. Naito from Tokyo Institute of Technology, the team conducted an initial assessment to the area that resulting agreement for the development of the campus.
Located in Malang and Blitar, East Java, UM was established in October 18, 1954 as PTPG Malang, as School of Education of Airlangga University, making it one of the oldest teaching institutes in Indonesia. UM was separated from Airlangga University on 20 May 1964 to become IKIP Malang. [3]

In 2023, ITS was ranked 621-630 worldwide according to the Top QS World University Rankings 2024, as well as ranked 146th in the Top QS Asian University Rankings 2024 (sixth in Indonesia after Gadjah Mada University, Bandung Institute of Technology, University of Indonesia, Airlangga University and Bogor Agricultural University).
