A lazaretto (/ ˌ l æ z ə ˈ r ɛ t oʊ / LAZ-ə-RET-oh), sometimes lazaret or lazarette (/ ˌ l æ z ə ˈ r ɛ t / LAZ-ə-RET), is a quarantine station for maritime travelers. Lazarets can be ships permanently at anchor, isolated islands, or mainland buildings.
The lazarette or lazaret (sometimes lazaretto) of a boat is an area near or aft of the cockpit. The word is similar to and probably derived from lazaretto . A lazarette is usually a storage locker used for gear or equipment a sailor or boatswain would use around the decks on a sailing vessel.
This lazaretto had five areas and five residential buildings for passengers who had to go through quarantine. From each side of the area where the houses for people were, there were the towers for the guards and the apartment for the Ottoman envoy who acted as a judge for Ottoman subjects who were visiting Dubrovnik.
Between 1403 and 1630 it housed a hospital which cared for people during the plague epidemics and as a leper colony, giving rise to the English words lazaret and lazaretto. It was later used, as were other islands, as a military post. It covers an area of 2.53 hectares (6.3 acres) large. [citation needed]
