Universitas Methodist Indonesia (UMI) Medan was named Perguruan Tinggi Methodist Indonesia (PTMI). It was a private university founded by the Methodist Church of Indonesia (GMI) in accordance with the decision of the annual conference which took place in Medan on 31 January 1965. Preparation of UMI officially began on August 1, 1965.
The idea for a university was first floated during the 1952 General Synod of the HKBP.
