On February 24, 2010, toward the end of a "Dine with Shamu" show at SeaWorld Orlando, the orca "Tilikum" pulled down an experienced trainer. [ 14 ] [ 15 ] Dawn Brancheau , a 40-year-old with extensive training experience, drowned as at least two dozen tourists looked on from above a whale tank and from an underwater viewing area.
Shamu / ʃ æ m uː / (c. 1961 [1] – August 16, 1971) was a female orca captured in October 1965 from a southern resident pod. She was sold to SeaWorld San Diego and became a star attraction. Shamu was the fourth orca ever captured, and the second female. [2] She died in August 1971, after about six years of captivity. [3]
John Hargrove is a former senior killer whale trainer for SeaWorld and supervisor of killer whale training at Marineland of Antibes in France. Hargrove appeared in the 2013 documentary Blackfish, wrote a book about his experiences in Beneath The Surface, and has campaigned in support of legislation in California and New York to end the practice of keeping killer whales in captivity.

In the late 1960's, Famous orca Shamu was the whale who set the stage and popularized marine performances. Theme parks, like Seaworld, have capitalized off of whale performances.
Corky 2 performing "The Shamu Adventure" on July 5, 2004. The stage at Shamu Stadium has since been redesigned to accommodate the new "Orca Encounter" show. Corky is the subject of various campaigns by animal rights activists and organizations, including PETA , demanding her retirement and release.
One Ocean, a killer whale show that premiered April 22, 2011, was hosted here, before being replaced with "Orca Encounter", along with, Dolphin Days, the park's dolphin show, and, a new show that made its debut on June 14, 2015, Clyde and Seamore's Sea Lion High.
